In a significant development signaling evolving political dynamics in Rivers State, the Simplicity Movement, a prominent support group for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has officially dissolved and rebranded as the Rivers Grassroots Movement (RGM). The announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Saturday, aligning with the governor’s directive for all political structures bearing his name to disband and support the ongoing peace process.
The Simplicity Movement, launched a year ago at the Kalabari National College field in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government Area, boasted a strong presence across all 23 LGAs in the state. The rebranded RGM will now operate as a non-partisan civic platform, focusing on peace-building, grassroots empowerment, civic engagement, and policy advocacy.
Sobomabo Jackrich, the national leader and convener of the group, emphasized that the decision was a voluntary act of solidarity with Governor Fubara’s leadership and commitment to prioritizing Rivers people. “Our action was not motivated by inducement, expectation, or political reward,” Jackrich stated. “It was a deliberate demonstration of belief in a leader who places Rivers people at the center of governance.”
Jackrich clarified that while the Simplicity Movement has ended, its values and vision will persist under the RGM’s new mandate. “We step aside not in weakness, but in strength; not in retreat, but in responsibility,” he said, reaffirming the group’s loyalty to Governor Fubara and commending FCT Minister and former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike for embracing reconciliation.
“We are not in opposition. We are not a faction. We are Rivers people, patriots, and builders of peace,” Jackrich added.
Other leaders of the group urged supporters across the state to remain peaceful, disciplined, and united in pursuit of a stable and progressive Rivers State. The move has garnered praise from various quarters, including the Rivers Elders Forum, which recently called on the President to support Governor Fubara in restoring peace to the state.
The formation of the RGM marks a new chapter in Rivers State’s political landscape, with the group pledging to continue its work under Governor Fubara’s guidance while fostering unity and development.
