Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has confirmed her intention to rejoin the Senate on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, as per a Federal High Court ruling. This decision stands despite an appeal that was filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
"I have almost two months left before the six-month period ends. Nevertheless, I've written to the Senate once more informing them that I’m returning on Tuesday, the 22nd, by God's special grace," she stated.
"I will attend because the court has indeed made a decision on that matter. While they claim it's an order, it isn't one; rather, it's simply a decision."
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is presently in her Kogi Central constituency for an empowerment initiative, observed that although her suspension did not stop her from interacting with constituents, it restricted her capacity to perform essential legislative responsibilities.
I already mentioned that each senator has three primary responsibilities. The first is legislative, involving the creation of laws and the review of treaties. Second is oversight, where we supervise ministers and agencies. Finally, there’s representation—something I am currently engaged in doing.
I identify the problems and challenges facing my community, ensuring they are represented in the federal budget. I've been quite successful at this task. Although I miss proposing new bills myself, it hasn't stopped me from being active in addressing these issues.
The senator announced that she has officially informed the Senate of her intended return by sending an official letter.
In the meantime, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed an appeal contesting the ruling that mandated her reinstatement. Submitted to the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, this notice—dated July 14, 2025—aims to reverse Justice Binta Nyako's decision which found that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension was legally unfounded and excessive.
This appeal, designated as CA/A//2025, stems from the lawsuit FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025 filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan to challenge her ouster from the legislative chamber.
Akpabio is challenging the ruling based on 11 different points, requesting that the appellate court overturn the judgment issued on July 4, 2025.
