A gorilla was caught on camera in a community within Cross River State.
It was spotted in a mountainous community located along the border between Nigeria and Cameroon.
A few months ago, elephants were spotted in the Boki LGA community, where they reportedly destroyed some farmlands.
Dr. Inayom Imong, a wildlife conservationist, announced on his social media account that the gorilla had also been spotted by their forest cameras in the community located along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.
He mentioned that Cross River gorillas are extremely rare and rarely observed. However, evidence of their ongoing existence primarily comes from the "nests" they build each night for sleeping and from camera trap footage.
He stated that the Cross River gorilla is the most endangered of all four gorilla sub-species and is listed as Critically Endangered.
Imong stated that the gorilla is confined to a limited region in the mountainous headwaters of the Cross River.
He pointed out that the animal faces threats from habitat loss, forest fragmentation, and occasional hunting.
He revealed that fewer than 300 gorillas remain throughout the landscape.
