Buba Galadima, a former ally of the late Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has announced that he has forgiven the former leader for all personal grievances, following Buhari’s death on Sunday in London, United Kingdom, from an undisclosed ailment. Speaking in Hausa, Galadima stated, “I forgive Buhari for everything he has done to me in life,” marking a poignant moment of reconciliation after years of public criticism.
Galadima, a key figure in Nigerian politics and former National Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), played a significant role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), being the fourth signatory to the merger agreement that birthed the party in 2013. He was instrumental in Buhari’s successful 2015 presidential campaign but later parted ways with the former president, becoming one of his fiercest critics.
In a recent interview, Galadima described Buhari as “the greatest fraud that has happened to Nigeria,” accusing him of concealing his true intentions for 15 years and prioritizing the elite over the masses, whom he claimed to represent. He dismissed Buhari’s relevance in current Nigerian politics, criticizing politicians visiting Buhari’s home as “useless people who don’t know their left from right.”
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023 and as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, will be laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. A Nigerian delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently in London to repatriate his remains.
In a separate development, Pastor Tunde Bakare, General Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, addressed speculations about a potential succession agreement with Buhari on Monday. Bakare clarified that there was no written pact for Buhari to hand over power to him, though he suggested Buhari saw him as a preferred successor. “He’s late. I will never say anything unfair about him,” Bakare said, noting that Buhari had urged APC presidential aspirants to freely choose his successor during a meeting ahead of the party’s primaries.
