The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has launched a nationwide strike today, directing lecturers across Nigeria to withdraw their services due to the government's delay in paying June 2025 salaries. This move, confirmed by ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna in Abuja, follows a National Executive Council (NEC) resolution enforcing a "No Pay, No Work" policy if salaries aren’t paid within three days of the due date.
- Universities like the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have already joined the strike.
- Prof. Piwuna highlighted worsening delays since the shift from IPPIS to GIFMIS payment systems, leaving lecturers in financial hardship.
- The union has reached out to the Minister of Education and the Accountant General with no resolution, calling it a "deliberate" attempt to frustrate university workers.
Unpaid Allowances Add Fuel to the Fire!
The strike comes amid ongoing disputes over unpaid Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), with N10 billion still outstanding from a promised N50 billion. Only N40 billion has been released, intensifying tensions.
A Recurring Crisis
This isn’t the first time ASUU has taken such action. Historical data shows over 200 strike days in the past decade, including an 8-month strike in 2022, reflecting ongoing funding and policy battles with the government.
